A new tack to get public comments

We are fast approaching the last of the public focus groups – Saturday, Feb.9. Because attendance has been less than desired, another approach was taken. At Plumb Library slips were put on the circulation desks in the Adult and Children’s departments and the staff encouraged to get public comments on them. In fact, there is a prize for the staff member who has his or her initials on the most slips submitted. So if you have been “bugged” by a staff person to give us your input – that may be where the cause lies.

To date 37 slips have been received. The comments range from “Very good selection of books” to “The DVDs need to be buffed(cleaned)!” with many thoughts in between. Depending on your point of view: we have adequate / inadequate parking; a beautiful / overcrowded building; friendly and helpful / crabby staff. By far the most frequent (13) comment was about the high quality of the staff – thank you on their behalf. Next most common (5) was the need for an elevator at the main library – something most of us can see the need for and agree upon.

The branch hours were found inadequate and the setting distracting and noisy. Look for a branch-specific survey in March that will tune in on issues the public has with using the Branch library. After 15-plus years things are getting a little seedy and with some energy and attention the branch can become the attractive hub is has been in the past. It is encouraging that so many people use both libraries in town, getting the most for their tax dollars.

If you haven’t given us your thoughts yet please take a few minutes and tell us the most important things for you and your library use – good or bad. Comment to this blog, email the director (elydon@biblio.org) or return one you took home or fill out a comment sheet at the desk at Plumb Library.

Thank you for your time and stay tuned for the latest topics and tallies.
